Malice at the Palace, Part Deux

Tuesday's L.A. Sparks-Detroit Shock game provided quite the entertainment when a melee broke out at the Palace of Auburn Hills - home to the infamous Pacers-Pistons free-for-all that took place in 2004.

Searching for snakes can be a bear

Kelvin Pereira (KP), Sonia McFadden, Christopher Pereira (holding bag containing a black rat snake) and David Mcfadden (holding bag containing a timber rattlesnake)

A few local adventuresome types who attended the 2008 Landisburg Fire Company's annual timber rattlesnake hunt fundraiser got to experience some other wildlife up-close-and-personal.

Area residents Kelvin Pereira (KP), Sonia McFadden, Christopher Pereira and David McFadden drove a short distance from where the rest of their group was hunting on July 19. David left the others to hunt a rugged, rocky open pipeline while the rest of the group waited near the vehicle.

Here's an excerpt from the e-mail sent to us by David:

As Sonia, Christopher and KP lounged inside the truck trying to keep cool, a black bear of gargantuan proportions approached completely unnoticed by all. Only when Sonia caught a glimpse of movement outside her window did she see the bear, which at that point was almost inside the vehicle with them. Sonia and the bear saw each other at the same time and the bear turned to meander up the pipeline.

The bear . . .

Baseball managers gone wild

It seems that the promotion people at minor-league baseball stadiums aren't the only ones trying to keep the fans entertained at games anymore. When some of these managers meltdown, boy, do they give it all they've got.

The most recent, Kash Beauchamp of the Witchita Wingnuts (which is just a great name) was left standing on the field in his red socks.

So in honor of these managers who go the extra mile in their rants, here's a look back at some doozies:

The latest twist in the Sasquatch Saga ...

(for past updates on this story see this and this.)

... is that Field & Stream has come up with the brilliant (marketing-wise) plan of offering $1 million to the first person who takes a verifiable photo of a sasquatch using a trail camera.

Some blog threads never die

albino1.jpg

A couple of truly old blog posts here on The Lineup Card are still generating commenting traffic. It's kind of fascinating, really. They just created lives of their own and kept on ticking.

In case you're curious, one is the infamous entry from Nov. 20, 2007, about the harvesting of an albino bear cub. That one has 78 comments and counting. And the other is the "Irked about the York Young Revolution" reader letter from Nov. 19, 2007, which has 60 comments thus far.

Fox show will highlight "Steagles"

steagles.jpg

TV viewing heads up:

Fox Sports Network's "Amazing Sports Stories" will highlight one of Pennsylvania's more interesting sports stories at 8 p.m. Sunday with the episode "The Steagles: When Rivals Became Teammates"

According to Fox Sports: "The Steagles episode portrays the unforgettable story of a team of rival underdogs who banded together in order to save the National Football League during World War II. With America in the midst of World War II, in 1943 the NFL faced a crisis. Since every NFL team was losing so many players, coaches and owners to the various military branches it was forced to merge two rival teams, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers, as one. And so the 'Steagles' were born. The Steagles, officially known as the Eagles at the time, were made up of a unique roster of military draft rejects with typical injuries varying from perforated eardrums, ulcers, and partial blindness to flat feet."

A refreshing tale

Amid the never-ending swirl of negative sports news, it's nice to read about the right kind of character that sports is supposed to build.

I found this story while trolling about on ESPN's Web site. It sounds like something out of a movie: A college softball player hits her first ever home run. She misses tagging first base. Her knee gives out as she doubles back. If her coaches or trainers help her, the homer is wiped out. ... Can you guess what happens next?
